Free Support and Outreach for Colorado's Filmmaking Community

Do you want to swim in the deep pool?  Play with the big boys?  Run in the fast lane? (OK, enough clichés!)  Last night, Colorado Film Commissioner Donald Zuckerman gave a talk on How to Produce a Feature Film – in the $5 million+ range.  At this level project, his first advice was to package your film: get a GREAT script then attach a name director and a “movie star.”  This is how you will attract funding. Don’t know any stars?  He had success on producing his first big budget film by hiring a Hollywood insider casting director who knew what to do.

For other services, he recommends a Collection Account Management Agreement and good finance and production attorneys.

Next, secure funding through equity investments, loans, soft money, and foreign pre-sales. He says to never approach investors until you have a Private Placement Memorandum.  Finally, bond your movie.

Did you miss the talk?  Our sponsors at Focal Press publish some very good books on movie production such as “Filmmakers and Financing: Business Plans for Independents,” and “Indie Film Producing: The Craft of Low Budget Filmmaking.”  Don’t forget, our Boulder Filmmaking Incubator Meetup members receive a 40% discount!

(BTW, the talk was held at the beautiful Sie FilmCenter.  A great gathering place for filmmakers (they have a bar!)  I can’t tell you how comfortable the seats are there.  Make sure to gather some friends and catch a flick!)
