Comment by Jim Brennan on July 20, 2011 at 11:03pm Hi Darlene,
I think I understand the confusion. I have noticed some glitches with Ning where I went months without getting any e-mail notifications, even when announcements were sent to the entire membership. There have also been times when the network seems rather arbitrary about what messages it sends on. It is entirely possible that has happened to you in this case. That is why the admins have been going through the media and notifying members individually for the past 7 months or so when those members have media that is over the limit.
For the record, the original notice went out on Dec 2 of last year and a follow up was sent out on 12/9. I still had a copy of that in my e-mail, so I have posted it below. I also know that I have sent out at least one reminder after the first of the year, but I could not tell you the exact date.
The photo and video rules were also updated with the policy change on Dec 3 of last year.
I am glad you have posted this question though. I am unsure how effective the Ning messaging service really is and I would be interested to know how many members did not receive these messages.

Comment by Jim Brennan on July 20, 2011 at 11:51pm I think there may be a number of reasons something like this happens (Again, the exact reason why we have been notifying members on an individual basis when we encountered excess content). I know that my inbox gets cluttered and I sometimes miss messages. I know that many e-mail apps have spam filters that might put a message in the spam box (happens to me once in a while), or it could be a glitch in the Ning system from time to time. That is something I have personally encountered.
I will not enter into a debate about whether the messages were sent out, because I sent at least three of them myself. While it is entirely possible that there were members who did not receive the message, all of the members I have been in contact with over the past 7 months about their content were aware of the change from the messages.
While I am very interested in attempting to make a determination on how effective Ning is at e-mail notifications (so I would love to see about 1600 responses to this post), the fact remains that the new policy was put into effect on January 1, 2011. Admins have e-mailed many members personally when we discovered they exceeded the content limit. To this date, no member to my knowledge has had their content deleted after it was approved because of this policy change. The only time that I am aware of that members have had their content deleted was if it was deleted out of the approval queue, accompanied by a message to the member reminding them of the new policy. The members were instructed to re-submit after they had removed the excess content. We have been very flexible and have worked very hard to inform and assist the membership in this process, and we continue to do so.

Comment by Darlene Cypser on July 21, 2011 at 10:03am All interesting theories but not on point. All messages go at least one place (or should): into the inbox on Ning. They aren't there. I rarely delete anything out of there. There are messages from 2011 and 2010 there but none related to picture policies. They should be there regardless of the e-mail forwarding settings. They aren't. Not from yesterday, not last week or 8 months ago.So if the messages were sent out then the settings on the OUTGOING messages were wrong and did not drop a copy into everyone's inbox as they should have.
So far everyone who has responded (except for Cassandra who said she had not received the earlier notice) is a member of the "inner circle" who may have known about the policy change anyway.
I'm not objecting to the policy change itself, I am objecting to the lack of notice to CASA members. Something is broken.

Comment by Jim Brennan on July 21, 2011 at 10:12am Actually there are no settings when an admin sending out a mass message. There is no way for us to pick and choose who gets it. The message goes out to everyone. Whether that message is RECEIVED by an individual member has more to do with that members settings.
Every member has the option in their settings to receive or not receive certain messages. When I looked at mine, some were checked and some were not. The admins have absolutely no way to override those settings. For example, if someone chooses to receive messages about discussions they participate in, but not receive messages that an admin sends out, we can't change that. I do not know what the default settings are.
