- Since the time I could shove a crayon into that sad little sharpener on the back of the 64 pack, I have been driven to create things. Wrapped since i can remember in the artist's incurable blessing. A double edge sword that makes you bleed ink. The stupid, beautiful, unstoppable drive to leave the world more full than I found it. Not sure what the text book term for it is...
In my teens and 20’s it was music, songwriting and lyrics. My early life as a storyteller was checkered with an all too common and volatile minefield of testosterone, bars, guitars and more attention than any one kid should have. At some point I sobered up emotionally and realized that the only reality that had stood constant through the blaring rock and roll haze was the call of creation.
Only problem was, music had borders. I now needed an outlet with bigger challenges. Thus, I became an indie filmmaker, short films and docs, small screenplays that could be achieved on the zero bank account of a guerilla. Still, many of my stories ventured far beyond the volunteer cast and pizza payment business model. The twisting tale of how those brain-children have been allowed to grow up reads like a simple chain of events, but I assure you it was not. Best described, it was and still is, a somewhat fate ridden stew of chaos theory, meticulous planning, hard work, dumb luck, and Mickey's voice always screaming from down near the spit bucket-
- "Get up Rock!".
But here's the elevator version; An odd documentary I did, lead me on a romp through the festival scene, which then lead me to my current manager, who in turn lead me to ICM and my current agent. Suddenly, my crazy ideas are getting read, even bought. Opportunities are popping up and things that resemble childish dreams are starting to materialize. Screenwriting in Hollywood can be supremely more demanding than in my home town of Denver. The process can be ever-stacking mounds of hard work, time and attention up front for many a maybe. But these are the challenges I yelled out wishes for, and such is the galvanized nature of the beast I have chosen to mount and spur.
The good thing is-
I still keep my crayons really sharp, and I am boundlessly thankful to the universe for every chance I get to use them.
