For a simple production: Makeup!

What can one use for a simple, pleasing make up job for a shoot? 

I have a simple powder pack with a little pad that I use when someone is too shiny, but it doesn't seem to do a great job of making them actually look better. 

Suggestions?

My suggestions:

On the low end, get people to do their own makeup. Hire a pro to come teach your cast makeup basics, if necessary.

On the high end, hire someone who knows what they're doing.
