Colorado Actors Scripts And Films
Free Support and Outreach for Colorado's Filmmaking Community
Hello CASA community-
Just a reminder to always do your research when choosing the right acting class. I have seen some ridiculous class offerings lately posted by people who clearly are not qualified to be teaching. There will always be predatory people looking to take advantage of the less informed, so please be careful, do your homework and choose wisely.
If you're looking for a REAL class, please feel free to message me and I will be more than happy to tell you about the great classes going on NOT ONLY at my studio, www.benjydobrin.com but also, at all of the other LEGITIMATE studios in our market as well. I believe that quality instruction and competition is healthy for our market, so please don't feel as though I am simply pitching my classes, as there are other great options as well, and I'm happy to tell you about ALL of them. This is just a reminder to please be careful when selecting the best fit for your needs.
All my best to my fellow artists-
Benjy Dobrin

I didn't realize there were so many charlatans out there, but it's a good reminder that you have to be careful of the con artists, and people who just aren't qualified. I've been a student of Benjy's for nearly 2 years now, and in that short period of time, I've done tons of films, am opening a regional premiere of a musical Friday night at The Vintage Theatre, and have my first lead in a show after that.
Benjy is a great teacher and he cares about his students and the acting community in general, so please don't see his posting as just a plug -- if you contact him, yes, he'll give you info on his classes, but he WILL let you know about the other LEGITIMATE acting coaches in the area. How many other teachers would do that?

We always recommend that CASA members use common sense and judgment when choosing classes, and I appreciate you reminding them of that. It is obvious that you have earned a position of some esteem among your students, and I respect that you are not just trying to pitch your own services.
However your post seems to be singling out another CASA member. While you are entitled to your opinion about their credentials, we cannot allow accusations to be thrown around. If you (or anyone) believes that someone is behaving in an unethical or illegal way, let an admin know and we will look into it. We have banned members before for such things, and would not hesitate to do so again. We have no desire for anyone to take advantage of our community. But we also do not want the forum to become a battleground.
If you could amend your original post to remove anything that references another member specifically, I would appreciate it. The rest of the message is a very valuable reminder
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly.

Permalink Reply by David William Murray Fisher on May 13, 2011 at 10:13am Thanks for posting this. And thanks for taking the initiative to confront it.
I've been lucky with finding good classes up here in Northern Colorado... but yes please do your homework!
Same goes for other 'agencies' via the web (usually) that ask for money because they will help you find work.
My word for the day is "Scamarama".
